Championship Fundraiser June 1

WEDNESDAY JUNE 1 – The Briar

As some of you might know, we are having a get together on Wednesday night at the Green Briar in Brighton to send off the D1 squad as they travel to Glendale, CO to compete for the National Championship. It would be great if all the members of the club, D1, D2, old boys, Allacidoos, everyone, could come out, have a beer and send off the guys in style. We are going to be doing a 50/50 raffle as well as a Chinese auction* with some really great prizes**. These will be huge fundraisers to offset the extreme cost to each player that this playoff run represents.

It is really important that you all come out and show your support for the club. Bring your friends and Girlfriends and buddies from college and coworkers and whomever else might be interested. It is really important that you try and bring as many people as you can from outside the club as well so they can see what we are all about as well as help raise a few bucks. This really only works if you put in the minimal amount of effort to come out yourself and encourage others to come out and see off the team.

*A Chinese auction is a combination of a raffle and an auction that is typically featured at charity, church festival and numerous other events. Can also be known as penny social, tricky tray or pick-a-prize according to local custom, or to avoid any reference to nationality.
The difference between a raffle and a Chinese auction is that in a raffle with multiple prizes, there is one “hat” from which names are drawn, but in a Chinese auction each prize has its own “hat”. This allows ticket buyers to choose which prize to focus on, as opposed to having a first, second, third, etc. prize.

**The prizes include an 1) 8GB ipod nano with touch screen, Skull Candy designer green headphones, and a $15 itunes gift card. 2) 2 Red Sox tickets for 8/4/2011 vs. the Indians in the right field box section, and Red Sox appearal. There will be several other Items and gift packages, as well, including wine and wolfhounds merchandise. In addition, special edition wolfhounds gear will be on sale.

The evening will start at around 7pm and the drawings will be held sometime around 10pm. Thats not too late for a school night so do your best. You need not be present to win prizes, so if you cant stay until 10, feel free to stop in at 7 and buy your tickets and take your chances on the prizes. If anyone has any questions about how the raffle works feel free to call or email me 518-961-0441 or Amiccio @ aol.com .

Wolfhounds to Sweet 16 (Report)

The Boston Irish Wolfhounds took a major step towards its goal of regaining the USA Rugby Division 1 title in Canton last weekend, as the Wolfhounds ground out a solid 33-22 win over the Raleigh (N.C) Vipers. With Raleigh ranked # 15 nationally and coming off a successful Spring season, the local team wasn’t taking anything for granted, prepared for this game with a series of matches against local opposition such as Boston RFC and Mystic River.

The Wolfhounds got off to a great start, with winger Steve Fry powering his way over in the corner. Outhalf Mark Tutton added the sideline conversion. Raleigh’s Dom Ferris put over a penalty kick shortly after to reduce the gap to 7-3, but the rest of the half belonged to the Wolfhounds, with the pack repeatedly gaining the hard yards and putting points on the board. Try scorers for the Wolfhounds included second row Nick Pineda and flanker Alex McIntyre, pushing the halftime score to 23-3.

The second half started well for the Wolfhounds, as they quickly increased the lead to 33-3, and the game appeared well in control ten minutes in. But someone forgot to tell Raleigh, and the big visiting pack soon begn to exert itself. Tries by Theo Burkhead and Mark Mordus, as well as astute kicking from Ferris kept the Wolfhounds pinned back. The Wolfhounds didn’t do themselves any favors by playing twenty minutes of the second half a man down, as first captain Peter Lennon and later center Tala Petelo spent time in the sin bin. The pace of the comeback ultimately proved to be too slow, and the Wolfhounds came away with the win, 33-22 being the final score.

Raleigh head coach Pete Smith was complimentary of the Wolfhounds after the game, enjoying the game and wishing the Wolfhounds well in the next round of the playoffs. This will see the Wolfhounds travel to Manassas, VA, where their opponent in the Round of 16 will be Metropolis, out of Minnesota. Metropolis have set high standards for themselves, playing a very tough schedule of Super League opponents in the Spring, and are high flying at the moment, having knocked off a highly regarded Atlanta Renegades team in their round of 32 game. The Wolfhounds will heave to be sharp to see off this challenge, scheduled for May 21st.
